Reconstructing Howard Carpendale – 2010
Who doesn’t remember “Ti Amo” (1977, 2ndplace in the German charts), “Hello Again” (1984, 5thplace), “Tür an Tür mit Alice” [Door to door with Alice] (1977, 8thplace), and “Dann geh doch” [Then just leave] (1978, 15thplace)?
For this tribute of CKW to the South African cult figure Howard Carpendale, musicians as diverse as Justus Köhncke, Erobique and choir director Barbara Morgenstern themselves wrote the arrangements.
For this year’s South Africa program at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, CKW has engaged a number of arrangers to edit some gems from Howard Carpendale’s sheer endless song repertoire. From an atonal version of “Hello Again” to the rock’n’roll sensation “Du hast mich” [You have me] (Howard Carpendale started his career as Elvis impersonator) up to a very abstract edition of the hit “Wie frei willst Du sein” [How free do you want to be], the program is bursting with surprises and unexpected turns. Howie like you never heard him before!
